Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed - Emily Giffin I wondered not far into this story if the person who wrote the description in the back actually read the book. According to that description, Rachel White is thrown into a quandary when on the eve of her thirtieth birthday she confesses her feelings to Dexter, the fiance of her best friend Darcy, and he returns them. Right there, I thought this might wind up in lame territory, since the author is going to have a hard time convincing me it makes sense or would be fair to anyone that then the wedding must go on. Well, it's both worse and not-quite-as-stupid than that. No feelings are confessed at all. Just a drunken falling into sex on page 11. I still felt sympathy for Rachel at that point--partly because of her voice in this first person narrative is easy to relate to, and partly because I just about instantly despised her bff, Darcy "I don't break up, I trade up" Rhone. But then we're on page 87, Dexter and Rachel are on their second kiss, there's a romantic email from him in her inbox the next morning, and Rach is still going shopping with Darce for the perfect wedding lipstick with about 200 pages left to go and I'm going WTF?? And the resolution to this tangle among Yuppie New Yorkers when I skip to the end ready to give up and read the last chapter? A cheat. Lame.
