I read one review that claimed the overall plot of this book is very reminiscent of Anne McCaffrey's Pern. That didn't occur to me when reading it, but the reviewer makes a good case. The woman at the center of this story, Rachel, is reminiscent of Lessa--only much bitchier. An angel named Gabriel carries her off to his eyrie to be his wife. There is some of the prickliness there you first see between Lessa and F'Lar. But ultimately I think this is very much its own book. Although one of the things I did love about it is again reminiscent of Pern. Ultimately for all the trappings about Angels complete with wings, this isn't fantasy--it's science fiction. And the way it twists both genres and explores its world completely absorbed me.
