Part high medieval fantasy, part police procedural as well as a coming of age story, I found Terrier unique and compelling from the start. Most high fantasy gives you a view from the nobility on high, and previous works set in this universe by Pierce were no exception. This one though, gives you the view from the bottom, the world of thieves and police that can sometimes seen interchangeable. And Beka isn't quite like any other character in fantasy, with a wonderful voice that builds a detailed and imaginative world.
